Global Artwork – Condé Nast Traveler 2012 Visionaries

Vintage School House Globe

Condé Nast Traveler Magazine have recently announce their visionaries of 2012.  Effectively, these are the people that they believe help to shape the world in which we live. Whether it be their conservation ethics, their diplomatic skills, philanthropy or determination to use their status to give back to the world.  Each of these 2012 “Visionaries” were asked (as part of the awards) to take a traditional school house globe and redesign it for auction, with the proceeds going to the “artists” chosen charity.

“The results were artistic and inventive—papier-mâché, feathers, yarn, and buttons all made appearances—but most importantly, they were inspiring.”

The globes are on auction at Charitybuzz until 19 September. Here are a few of the creations, you can read more on the visionaries, their charities and their creations here.

Ai Weiwei

The artist gave no real comment in relation to the reasoning behind this creation except to say that “it speaks for itself”!…. I will let you be the judge of that, but the charity which helps advocate for the rights of China’s sex workers and AIDS victims, and runs the Fuping Health Workshop is definitely a worthy cause.

Olivia Wilde

This globe, created by Wilde herself, is made of papier-mâché, “which is classic Haitian,” she says. “The base is wrapped in palm fronds, and the feathers represent carnival, which is major in Haiti.” The proceeds for this globe will go to fund the building of schools in Haiti.

The globes below were painted by a Haitian artist who suffers from aids with funds going towards the Aids and HIV centre programme in Haiti.

Christy Turlington Burns

With proceeds going towards reducing global motherhood mortality….

“Motherhood is a sisterhood that connects women around the world through a universal experience. I decorated this globe with faces of some of the women who have inspired me over the last several years. These women are not just statistics. They are mothers, sisters, and friends.  And they all deserve the chance to survive pregnancy and childbirth.”  —Christy Turlington Burns

Susan Sarandon & Somaly MamProceeds from the globe artwork will benefit Heifer International and The Somaly Mam Foundation

“The world is becoming smaller and smaller as our actions, cruel or kind, responsible or thoughtless, reverberate around the globe. The earth’s balance is so fragile.” — Susan Sarandon

Heifer International, works to alleviate hunger and poverty by providing livestock and agricultural training to the needy in 40 countries. Somaly Mam was also a recipient of the Visionary 2012 awards and their entry is below…

Hilary Clinton

Hilary, unfortunately did not get out the glitter and glue, but commissioned both of the following globes to be made. Unfortunately these ones will not be auctioned but will be displayed in the Diplomatic Reception Rooms at the State Department’s headquarters in Washington, D.C in honor of Condé Nast Traveler’s25th anniversary, and the 50th anniversary of the U.S. State Department’s Office of Art in Embassies (AIE).  Noted Pakistani-American artist Shahzia Sikander and acclaimed fabric and mosaic artist Nick Cave have designed two special globes. Both artists have collaborated with AIE.

The first has been created by New York based Shahzia Sikander.

…The second is by Nick Cave
