Illustrating your Interior

Drawing Hands - Escher

Ironically, as we move in a world of computer generated precision, with electronic games becoming so realistic you feel that you are almost part of the car race or violent battle of the game you are playing, it seems that interior design, furniture and homeware designers are taking the realism of our actual homes and surroundings and making it a little surreal. Whether it is furniture which has been illustrated to show it as something that it is really not, or a shop space which makes you feel like you have stepped into a comic book….. illustrating our interiors is a fun way of adding a little of the whimsical to your daily life. From commercial interiors to the humble home I have included some of my favourite illustrated interiors.

Red Design Group

Red Design Group is a Melbourne based company who take a very collaborative approach to their projects.  They engage the skills of interior designers, brand consultants, architects, graphic designers and digital experts to bring together a space for their clients that allows customers / clients to interact with their brand.

One of their projects is “The Candy Room” in Mebourne.  The designs have taken the concept of kids in a candy store to the extreme, making you feel like you are selecting candy from a child’s sketch book imagination.  You can just imagine Willy Wonka about to walk through the door at any moment with an “everlasting gobstopper”.  Even better, the owners Cristina Velardo and Leonie Schwetzer started their company Sweet Enough to import sugar free candy products into Australia, so what are you waiting for a little sugar free pleasure.

Seletti

Look very carefully, yes this is real furniture made to look like a sketch. Seletti, whose motto is “(R)evolution is the only solution”.  They aim to come up with innovative, creative household products through the team work of their designers. The “Trip Cartoon” range of furniture is designed to look like it have been drawn into the room. Perfect for a kids bedroom.

For those who just want a taste of the Whimsical…………..

There is an illustrative interior piece for all…..

Typewriter Cushion by Publisher Textiles

Publisher Textiles Typewriter cushion collection

Sydney Based Publisher Textiles Typewriter Cushion Collection 2011 are available in a number of colours, they are termed as – “A collection designed to pretend to write your memoires, your novel or anything you should be doing??? Whilst procrastinating on the couch!!”

The Cherry on the Cake

Le Cerise Sur Le Gateau - Cushion

Le Cerise Sur le Gateau pillow

French Textile artist Anne Hubert developed a taste for customizing french linen into something a little more quirky and in 2005 she launched her own business “La Cerise Sur Le Gateau” (sounds so much better than “the cherry on the cake”) which has certainly created some delicious textile items. Her work includes “some basic elements from our grandma’s kitchen sprinkled with flashy touches and quirky images”. Ooo La La.

Even better she has also launched a book which shows us how to put our own little cherries on the cake!! I think I may have to invest. So even better you can illustrate interiors yourself………..

Last but not least……..

Keeping with the French theme, Swedish Born of Parisian Abode, illustrator and fashion designer Lovisa Burfitt has put her illustrations to grace Rorstrand table wear through to the shop displays and fittings of fashion store H&M.

Rorstrand Mlle Oiseau Collection

“The new Lovisa Burfitt collection for Rörstrand – an exclusive series of bone china pieces – is the story of the eccentric Mademoiselle Oiseau. The beautiful collection includes a dish, a box, a small plate, an espresso cup, a larger cup and a piece of jewelry. A pretty and feminine style that evokes a Paris of another era by a few elements, a cat, a bird cage, feathers and a fashionable lady, the Mademoiselle Oiseau which gives its name to the whole collection, all designed by Swedish Lovisa Burfitt,….Lovisa created this wonderful whimsical characters, where the idea is that each piece could be used in several ways.  “You can put your brushes in latte mug, or your toothbrush. You should be able to have the box on your dressing table, to hold your jewelry, or have salt in it on the kitchen table.  You can set a candle in an espresso cup, it becomes a very beautiful light of it, “says designer Lovisa Burfitt.”
