Iron Lady – Cal Lane

You would be right in thinking that there is a little bit of a theme this week, with Lace being the dominating topic.  As I was searching for inspiration for Wednesdays post I stumbled upon the amazing work of hairdresser turned sculptress Cal Lane.

Lane’s mother owned a hairdressing Salon, and as a result of one of the staff saying she did not have what it takes to become a hairdresser, she took this as a challenge and set to prove them wrong… which whilst she did…. it was never her serious vocation.

Born on Vancouver Island, Lane studied art and welding at several schools in Canada, before she made her home on a sprawling, former farm in upstate New York. The property is owned by noted modern-and-contemporary art collectors David and Diane Waldman, who reside in Rancho Mirage, California, and allowed Lane to stay free of charge unique artist-patron relationship. They display a wheelbarrow donated by Lane in their home.

Whilst her work has become more political in recent years, I just love the work that she has done taking everyday industrial objects and injecting a beauty into them with the lace effects of a steady hand and a cutting tool….
