Roughing it – In Luxury

Situated in the heart of London’s Kings Cross, near the newly renovated St Pancreas station,  Rough Luxe hotel regards itself as half rough, half luxury. Where you attribute the half rough or the half luxury is up to you….perhaps a little bit of luxury in a rough part of London or given the revamp of the iconic St Pancreas station, the hotel is a little bit of rough in a luxurious London.

The Grade II listed home was transformed by internationally acclaimed architect and interior designer Rabih Hage in 2008. Originally based in France, Rabih Hage moved to london.  Hage’s style is focused upon introducing furniture that is art into his schemes to mould “function and aesthetics”.  This is done with a mixture of celebrating the new and up and coming artists as well as those with a more established background.   I love the idea of celebrating the new and undiscovered…. who may one day be the new Eames or Marc Newson!

As a result their look is one of a mix of old and new furniture and art, which combine colours and beautiful fabrics with cheap materials and existing distressed original walls. “Cheap materials are treated as precious items and preserved for their beauty and memory of the site.”

……………wrapped up with the new art of the furniture or the wall adornments whether they be canvas or light shades….

…. or a little tongue in cheek humour….

The philosophy of the hotel is perhaps a little different from that of your conventional hotel.  The luxury is all about the experience.

“Guests at a Rough Luxe hotel might have a small room or a small shower cubicle, but the luxury is in the choice of the wine, the bed linen, the art on the walls and the people looking after you.”

That sounds like my kind of luxury….on with the colourful journey…….
